Type Bloc Display

Overview: Type Bloc Display is a modular display typeface developed as part of an MA investigation into modularity within type design. The brief was self-initiated, exploring how constraint-based systems can generate expressive yet coherent typographic outcomes. Influenced by modernist experimentation from designers such as Jurriaan Schrofer and Josef Albers, the concept draws on the logic of modular construction — using repeatable geometric components to build letterforms within a consistent visual framework. The strategy positions modularity as both structure and creative catalyst, demonstrating how limitation can produce variation, rhythm, and personality across a type system. Currently in development, the project is being expanded into a full glyph set and variable font, further testing scalability, flexibility, and the potential of system-driven type design.
