The Value of Modularity
The Value of Modularity
This project looks at the value of modularity through the lens of type design and understanding modular letterforms. The project analyses the historical context of how modular typography has become influential in the development of type design, as well as how letterforms are seen through a systemised way of thinking. The purpose of this project was to analyse the visual relationship between modularity and its associations in typography. Analysing first the history, allowed modularity to open up many directions for me to take. Exploring first traditional ways to design modular letterforms through hand-lettering and calligraphy, helped me to gain a deeper understanding of modernist design principles. This has influenced designers of today to adapt, develop and further add value towards modularity within type design, through a systematic way of seeing letterforms. Seeking this for myself, allowed me to have an open mind to explore unfamiliar areas within calligraphic writing, type design and modular systems. The final outcome is a carefully curated, fully bounded book that visually explores modular systems in typography. It examines how modular principles can shape the design of letterforms, from development to application. The book serves as both a type specimen and a broader investigation into the adaptability of modular typography. Through structured visual experiments, it demonstrates the creative possibilities of systematic constraints in type design. Additionally, it features designer quotes that add valuable discussions on modularity in typography, enriching the exploration with industry insights. This project reinforced my understanding of modularity while addressing a key question: "What is the value of modularity in type design, can this help develop the understanding within type design and letterforms through a modular approach? By pushing the boundaries of modular design, this project contributes to the ongoing discourse on systematic approaches in contemporary typography.
